The Importance of Good Mental Health When Living With Long Covid

Updated: Oct 11, 2024

Long Covid is a chronic illness affecting millions in the UK, with around 2 million people experiencing symptoms like chronic fatigue, cognitive difficulties, breathing difficulties and nerve damage long after recovering from the initial COVID-19 infection. This condition often feels invisible, leading to misunderstanding and a lack of support from friends, family, and the medical community. The emotional toll can be profound, sometimes resulting in anxiety, depression, and isolation.

The relationship between Long Covid and mental health is significant; the stress of managing persistent and fluctuating symptoms can exacerbate mental health issues, creating a challenging cycle that is exhausting. Acknowledging these struggles is essential, as is recognising the dangers of “toxic positivity”—the idea that we should always maintain a positive outlook, or respond well to being told, ‘you look good’. This mindset can lead to feelings of guilt and inadequacy when facing genuine difficulties.

To promote mental wellbeing, we at Long Covid SOS want to encourage people living with Long Covid to focus on authenticity, and to learn to live well in their new space and time. Seeking support from others with similar experiences, prioritising self-care, and communicating openly with loved ones can create a healthier mental outlook and enable purpose to be found in often the most unlikely places. Professional help, such as different forms of therapy; talking, walking, music, knitting or art therapy can also provide practical coping strategies.

As we approach World Mental Health Day on 10th October 2024, it’s crucial to highlight the importance of good mental health for those dealing with Long Covid. By creating an environment that embraces our realities and supports emotional expression, we can break the silence and advocate for a compassionate understanding of the mental health challenges associated with this chronic illness.
